Pretend radio station Tavistock FM
« on: July 30, 2026, 06:34:09 pm »
Sometimes I imagine I run a little radio station in the Cotswolds or further afield. I imagine I have a fairly large living room with old age stone
built walls with some hangings over them for decor and a bit of sound treatment and a hydraulic 15M military mast with a colinear antenna VHF on the top.

Primrose Gardens Tavistock looks nice and tidy

I have a red button and the mast goes up and down when I am done for the evening.

Just running just 5 Watts of FM stereo to cover the village clearly in decent stereo from an old school NRG PLL rig with a nice quality stereo encoder.

Nice little mixer, with a laptop and a CD player and a nice microphone and a couple of compressors. A nice valve one for
the microphone to sound a bit like a USA presenter. A nice comfy chair and to be able to to it in all weathers, even in the snow
on chilly winters evenings.

I would have a nice 40inch Tv with a pretend open fire place playing on it so it felt cosy but most likely
have actual central heating.

Dimmed lights in the room, maybe start at 8pm every evening and finish at my leisure playing any music I fancied.

39:36 Bedford cottages look like a nice place to do it from as well.

Just a bit of fun really.

I often dream of having my own transmission cover an area afew 100 meters no more, would be difficult to do, to confine, line of sight go out 10/20miles. I suppose down in a valley by the coast, like on beyond paradise or something, it would easier to do

One of the Chinese 500mW with the antenna down would probably not get beyond the house, make that dream a reality ?

I doubt anyone gets raided from a TX covering their living room.

Wire a little 12v battery one of the in car ciggy lighter TX ?

A few meters seems like a very very small coverage area, I am curious to what is the specific attraction to that radionortheast ?

I actually meant afew 100 meters, saxumundham would be a good place as you don’t hear anything on fm, there are so many clear spacers for something.  :o maybe you could have something playing continuous disco music

I have one of those 0.5w, I use with the aerial retracted, I imagine it wouldn’t get too far, I do get muilpath in the bathroom from it barely 7 meters away. I have an 8006 too, i’ve set it put out a minus db figure, it does samething with the aerial retracted, i’ve not checked in the garden they do get around the house the same.

It would be quite possible with some milliwatts and a low down antenna. Unless your antenna was on a chimney of a house on a clear hill it would be attenuated massively through all the local domestic walls if you are in a built up area.. you could just test it at different heights... start at 2m off ground and check around the neighbourhood. I bet 150 milliwatt would barely go 300m with an antenna low to the ground.

when I tested 1w, brough the aerial down so the aerial would of been 1 meter off the ground, indoors too, there was nothing there on the remote reciever, I guess that was an experiment.

i’ve been thinking of getting an aerial outside, it seems were ever I move it to in the loft maybe start to get some mulitpath, or start to loose some signals, while others maybe increase, is mondo annoying, I removed the tv lead that went all the way across the top of the loft, it can be moved down the loft, there does seem to be no sweet spot. I’m wondering with it been just a single story, if having an aerial at the same height outdoors would cure it.

Maybe get an installer to put one of those folded things other people have on the tv pole, would be inconspicous, I don’t suppose afew mw would go very far, it might not pick up that well either. Any aerial up there would need an installer would be awkard, not knowing it would work until it was up.

I suppose walking round with the aerial on a pole could be done see if it works. If you’ve got a pole that attaches to the wall, with my own aerial on top, I don’t know see how it could be done, attached to the wall with the aerial on top, but there would barely any wind resistance if it could be done, (visible obviously) to get it above the loft would need an extra 2meters would mean wind resistance, I guess this is a problem.

An aerial could sit behide the fence it would be barely off ground, any low power mw signal wouldn’t go far, unless there was some weird sweet spot close to the ground I doubt it work well for hearing anything. I was able to get an aerial through the roof at the old house, the only vents here are low down dosen’t seem like anyway.
I suppose the most structally sound way would be to have a hole near the apex of the roof, the aerial can go through and the pole holding it up would be in the loft not have the wind resistence, asumming it would work the aerial could sit outside, don’t see how that could done. I was going to ask on rn, don’t know if i’d get anywere with it, I don’t know how i’m going to approach the subject of getting an aerial semi permenant outside.

it would nice to have a 1w, make playlists, put programes from older stations, with nice sounding stereo, beable to hear it through a remote reciever know its your own would be something, 8) its not something you can have.
