Irish Pirate Radio / Re: Are there any pirates in Ireland

The thing is there really isn't much of a reason to bother now given the internet exists. You can set up a station for buttons and have access to a world audience (whether they listen is another story) but the access to them is there. As well as that you don't have the risks of the authorities turning up and possibly taking everything if the worst case happens and they do find the studio. The risk vs the reward is no longer there i think. I do miss pirate radio but at the same time given the choice on offer via the internet i wouldn't want to go back now.

Technical Corner / Re: What bleeder resistor
« Last post by ZoZo on December 19, 2025, 01:03:23 pm »
There are 2 different approaches I have and would use for this application, first being an very large air wound inductor on either an acrylic or plastic former, which to DC is a short circuit to ground and having no affect to the antenna performance (as-long-as the inductance is high enough). This is a typical ham style approach too and sometimes this inductor can reside inside the TX its self connected across the antenna connection. The other option is to use static discharge balls spaced according to the power rating of the transmitter , however this is more of a broadcast thing and with Medium wave masts especially.

The bleeder resister will also work and I'd perhaps choose a valve close to 1Meg ohm and only requiring a power rating of 1/4 W even at QRO power levels of 500W.

One final approach I also see in some Ham home-brew kits are GDT's or Gas Discharge Tubes. Much like a resister and are even use in commercial lighting arresters.

I think they had more high power stations in the 80’s and 90’s, someone was asking on rn if there were more stations on mw than fm, I think they have a few more stations there that can reach the skywave at night, were we only have radio blackbeard, we have the dutch pirates too that we can hear late on an evening. I think too that pirates on fm in both the uk/ireland are much rarer now, quite a number of threads on rn are about it too.

Technical Corner / What bleeder resistor

With a long pole as aerial you get the wind blowing can built up static, also from thunderstorms, in the loft you still get the samething happening, maybe from electrical cables.
You need a dc short connection, between the signal and ground connection, I went with a short bit of wire, the aerial looked like a jim in the end. As when tried to find out the bleeder resistor needed kind of went to ham stuff, I couldn’t find anything about the value of the resistor, or what rating they would need to be for the power.
I though i’d just ask this, just wondering if anyone knows the value of resistor, maybe a chart of what the wattage need to be, so what it would need to be for afew w’s, would there any point doing this over using a wire. I suspect it wouldn’t need to be anything more that a 1/4 of watt, you wouldn’t want the value to be too low, suppose it could become a dummy load.

Sometimes I get a message at login in safari, that this is an insecure site, wonder what it could mean, i've also seen a few ads now and again don't know if they're supposed to be there or not.

I had a look too and I'll be damned if I'm able to find a download link for the MP3. Have you tried emailing the guy? rangz.indie@gmail.com

I thought I was hearing a pirate afew weeks ago turned out to be radio stoke had taken to playing some reagae, wonder how common this is, do you tune to something think it is a pirate?.

I’ve not heard any pirates ones from the nearest cities here since 2021, dosen’t seem like any will come back now.  I supose the signal might be abit ropey on a bbc local radio station traveling a long distance, might be playing something you’d not normally hear.
I was going to post this over on radionecks too, seems like theres noone over there too, do hear alot of talk of building transmitters but nothing gets heard.

Aew months I thought I was hearing something interesting down there on 88.2, playing brit pop, signal was there for a while stereo sign there but not overly strong, then you could tell this was in a car tx, you got that tell tail fluttering. I think what made me think it was something albert’s talked about something been set up in the pennines in the past, they’ll problalby say nothing is there
